Cancer Prevention Tips/Understanding RisksWhile it is not always possible to prevent breast cancer, by practicing healthy habits you are taking an active role in managing your health. Lifestyle factors, for example, may affect your risk of breast cancer. You can help yourself to stay healthy by:
- Controlling your weight
- Stopping smoking
- Getting plenty of physical activity
- Breast-feeding
- Discontinuing hormone therapy
- Avoiding exposure to environmental pollution
- Eating a healthy diet may decrease your risk of other diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and stroke, and help you maintain a healthy weight — a key factor in breast cancer prevention
- Being vigilant about breast cancer detection. If you notice any changes in your breasts, such as a new lump or skin changes, consult your doctor. Also, ask your doctor when to begin mammograms and other screening procedures to detect breast cancer.
