Diabetes is a chronic condition in which your body is unable to properly use and store glucose (a form of sugar). Instead of converting sugar into energy, it backs up in your bloodstream - causing your blood glucose (blood sugar) to rise too high. Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are the most commonly diagnosed. If you develop diabetes while pregnant (a condition called gestational diabetes), you are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes later in life. Although it is not known exactly what causes diabetes, it is believed that genetics and environmental factors, such as obesity and lack of exercise, play a role. Early detection and treatment are important to reduce your risk of developing complications. Regular blood sugar screenings can help: know your numbers, know your risks.
