Prevention and Education

Prevention, education, and talking with your doctor all play an important role in taking care of your heart. Eating right, exercising, and quitting smoking can significantly reduce your risk for heart disease. We can help you achieve your heart healthy goals with classes, screenings and tobacco cessation programs that are conveniently close to home and, in many cases, free.

Current Classes
At our nutrition education classes, learn how to improve your cholesterol numbers and make heart-healthier food selections. Check out our exercise, yoga and Pilates classes and our stress reduction programs. Learn more.

Screenings
If you are currently being treated for heart disease or cholesterol, you should continue to have your numbers monitored by your doctor. Knowing your cholesterol and blood glucose numbers is the first step to heart health.

Healthy men and women age 20 years and older should have a “fasting” cholesterol test, including total cholesterol, LDL, HDL and triglycerides, every 5 years or more often, depending on risk factors and medical history.

You can find out your numbers – total cholesterol, HDL, HDL ratio and blood glucose – at a free, non-fasting fingerstick screening. We also offer free blood pressure checks, with no appointment necessary. Lahey Cardiology also offers a free blood pressure clinic, open to the public, Wednesdays from 9-11 am.

Tobacco Cessation
This three-part series offers a detailed approach to the quitting process, including information on nicotine replacement products, nutrition and relaxation ideas, motivators to quit, and more. A 32-page handbook is included, to help put your thoughts into action and keep you tobacco free. Learn more.

Heart Attack Symptoms and Warning Signs

Depending on your age, gender, and medical health, symptoms may be milder or consist of signs other than chest pain. Learn the warning signs of a heart attack and what to do in an emergency.
