Skin to Skin
Skin to skin is important for all babies and mothers. The CDC and World Health Organization recommend skin to skin for 30 minutes shortly after birth. Some of the benefts include:
- Babies stay warmer.
- Babies cry less and feed better.
- Mothers relax and feel calm.
- It helps to create connection and comfort.
Hand ExpressionBabies have a strong sense of taste touch and smell in the first days after birth. Hand expression is a very helpful skill to practice after birth. Watch this
video with explicit instructions for hand expression.
Good LatchA baby's latch creates comfort. Watch this
video for an example of a good latch. Ask our lactation consultants if you need help improving your comfort.
The Three Golden Rules About Breastfeeding In the beginning days:
- Babies feed 8 or more times each day
- Babies have yellow golden mustard like bowel movements by 5 - 7 days of life
- Mothers are comfortable with breastfeeding
