• Upper: You are asked to drink a barium solution, then x-rays of your stomach are taken. The barium outlines the inside of the stomach, helping to reveal any abnormal areas.
• Lower: X-rays are taken after barium sulfate is introduced by enema. The barium sulfate helps to outline your colon and rectum so that they appear clearly on the x-rays that follow.
